Student leader Darfur arrested in Khartoum

KHARTOUM (26 Oct) - The security forces arrested yesterday afternoon (Sunday) at 5: 00 Osman Ibrahim Al Niegemi, the president of the Darfur Student association at Khartoum University. He was arrested with five other students in front of the gate of the University by 18 security officials with two cars.
The police forces intervened at Dongola University trying to resolve the students dispute with the University. Last Wednesday the University administration cancelled a police case opened against 56 students from Darfur. The students were detained after they disputed the increase of fees for orphans by 25 pounds at the college for Human studies. The students protested the cruel treatment by the police. Some explained their injuries to Radio Dabanga. Student Al Sadiq Abdelkarim Adam said that the police stormed their dormitories and started beating them. They arrested students and even burnt down some rooms and destroyed the properties of students.
The student association requested the implementation of a presidential decree for cancellation of the fees for Darfurian students. The spokesman of the association, Adel Rahman Al Zanusi asked for the immediate release of Al Niegemi and his colleagues. He spoke to Radio Dabanga from the University of Khartoum. In a related development, the vice chancellor of Khartoum University, Mustafa Idris, issued a directive to register regular students of Darfur. The president of the student association at Khartoum University, Osman Ibrahim Al Niegemi told Radio Dabbing before his arrest yesterday called on the students to go for registration. He appealed to the Sudanese and international community to support the strife of his association in order to allow Darfurian students to study at the universities. He said that his organization want to get support for the treatment of students who were injured in the recent clashes at the Khartoum University. He asked also money for the bail out of six detained students. Another problem is the housing of female students who have recently been kicked out from their dormitories. The student organization opened a bank account at the Faisal Islamic Bank in Khartoum.
